What happened is what this article describes. We have become conditioned to accept and even vote for a society that denies us basic needs, leaving us angry, fearful, and hateful of others. Kindness is nonsense in such a world. It has as little point as charity, hope, or community. When much of a society’s better angels seem to be absent, look at the structures that make it so.
